inarticulate

If there is one thing I should have learned by now in graduate school is how to sound intelligible during an interview by anticipating questions and having an answer before I go. I meant to do that. The position was to be a volunteer mentor for a foster child; a program developed by the YMCA.

When he asked why I thought I would be a good mentor I said I was patient and reliable and non-judgmental and understanding. He said those were the top four things for which they look. When he asked what is my biggest concern for the world or the community I said there were many, but one that comes to mind is that america is not becoming more progressive as I had always suspected it would. Instead people want to ban abortion and are becoming more and more against gay marriage. It only occured to me later that my answer probably was not the smartest. I basically just admitted to the guy that runs a program at the YMCA that I am for abortion and gay marriages. Not that I am ashamed of such things but we all know what the C stands for. I think it was okay because he seemed to like my answer and by the end of the interview he was was willing to let me hang out with children.

I am glad to see you are still alive after our crazy night! I think your answer was great and those kids would be lucky to have you as a mentor!
