The other day F/ and I talked about how difficult it is to make friends outside of the uni. The closest I have come is to meeting someone from a course I took in northern california who then moved to Irvine. She does participate in departmental activities and may soon be a postdoc here, but she counts, right? Oh, and the friend part might be a little bit of a stretch considering I did not know until we met for lunch today that her wedding date is in a couple weeks nor did I know she had two sisters, or she recently moved to newport beach or that she used to teach with Marko in washington or that her fiance climbs or that she takes yoga. So what would you call that? A friendly acquaintance? Well, we might go to a movie together this weekend, so there... we must be friends. My semi-uni pseudo-friend. I like the sound of that. Could you please help me find some more?

No, I don't. And considering I do not even meet people at the uni deitrich's, what would make you think I would meet them anywhere else? It is just my natural unfriendly personality.
